Event Report
World Zoonoses Day was observed at BGS Institute of Nursing Sciences on 6 July 2026 in the Multipurpose Hall of the institution. The programme was conducted to mark the global observance that commemorates the administration of the first vaccine against rabies, a zoonotic disease, and to create awareness among healthcare students about diseases that are transmissible between animals and humans. A total of 60 students from the 4th Semester B.Sc. Nursing programme actively participated in the event. Dr. Nagappa Karabasavanar, Professor and Head, Veterinary College, Hassan, was invited as the resource person for the occasion. He delivered an informative and interactive session on the origin, transmission, prevention, and control of various zoonotic diseases, drawing upon his extensive expertise in veterinary science and public health.
Objectives
The primary objective of the programme was to sensitize nursing students to the significance of World Zoonoses Day and to enhance their understanding of zoonotic diseases and their impact on public health. The session aimed to educate participants on the modes of transmission of diseases from animals to humans, common zoonotic infections prevalent in the region, and the preventive and control measures that can be adopted at the individual, community, and healthcare levels. It further sought to emphasize the importance of a One Health approach that integrates human, animal, and environmental health, and to equip future nursing professionals with the knowledge required to identify, manage, and educate the public about zoonotic diseases in their clinical practice.
Outcomes
The programme successfully enhanced the awareness and knowledge of the participating students regarding zoonotic diseases, their transmission, and preventive strategies. Students gained valuable insights into the interconnection between animal health and human health, and developed a clearer understanding of the role nurses can play in the early identification, prevention, and control of zoonotic infections. The interactive session encouraged active participation, with students engaging in discussions and clarifying doubts with the resource person. Overall, the event fostered a deeper appreciation among the students for interdisciplinary collaboration between medical and veterinary sciences in safeguarding public health.
