Event Report
The BGS Institute of Nursing Sciences, Nagamangala Taluk, Mandya District, observed World Drowning Prevention Day by organizing a Mime Competition to create awareness about drowning prevention and water safety. The programme was inaugurated in the presence of Principal Dr. Komala H. K. as the Chief Guest, while Vice Principal Mr. Sharath S. served as the Judge for the competition. A total of 49 students participated, representing 6 groups. Through creative and impactful mime performances, students highlighted the causes of drowning, preventive measures, and the importance of timely rescue and first aid. At the end of the competition, Group 1 secured First Place, and Group 6 secured Second Place for their outstanding performances.
Objectives
The programme aimed to raise awareness among nursing students about drowning as a preventable public health issue and to educate them on essential water safety practices, drowning prevention strategies, emergency response, and the importance of community awareness. It also encouraged students to develop communication, teamwork, and health education skills through creative expression.
Outcomes
The competition enhanced students’ understanding of drowning prevention and emergency preparedness while improving their confidence, creativity, and teamwork. The mime performances effectively conveyed life-saving messages, motivating participants to promote water safety awareness within the community and strengthening their role as future healthcare professionals in injury prevention and health promotion.
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
This activity contributed to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being by promoting injury prevention and saving lives through awareness on drowning prevention. It also supported SDG 4: Quality Education by providing experiential learning through creative health education and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals by encouraging collaborative participation among students and faculty in promoting public health awareness.
