Educational Visit to the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH)
Event Report
The Department of Adult Health Nursing, BGS Institute of Nursing Sciences, organized an educational visit to the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH), Mysuru, on 13 July 2026. The visit aimed to provide students with practical exposure to the diagnosis, management, rehabilitation, and prevention of speech, hearing, and communication disorders. Students observed various departments including Audiology, Speech-Language Pathology, Cochlear Implant Rehabilitation, and Special Education. They also learned about advanced diagnostic procedures such as Audiometry, Tympanometry, Otoacoustic Emission (OAE), and Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) testing while interacting with multidisciplinary healthcare professionals.
Objectives
The educational visit was conducted to enhance students’ understanding of speech, hearing, and communication disorders, familiarize them with advanced diagnostic and rehabilitation services, and provide insights into the role of nurses in caring for individuals with speech and hearing impairments. It also aimed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and clinical practice, promote interprofessional collaboration, and strengthen students’ observation, communication, and critical thinking skills.
Outcomes
The visit provided students with valuable hands-on learning and improved their knowledge of specialized diagnostic techniques, rehabilitation services, and patient-centred care. Students gained a better understanding of the importance of early screening, multidisciplinary teamwork, and the nurse’s role in patient education and rehabilitation. The experience enhanced their clinical competencies, professional confidence, and ability to apply theoretical knowledge in specialized healthcare settings.
